A 25-year-old welder, Stephen Francis, who allegedly stabbed his elder brother with a broken bottle, was on Wednesday arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court.

Mr Francis, who resides in the high-cost area of Kaduna State, is charged with causing injury.

He pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 27.

He said that the defendant used a broken bottle to stab his elder brother Joseph on his shoulder and one of his hands, following a disagreement over money.

Mr Leo said the offence contravened Section 284 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

Section 284 stipulates a five-year jail term for offenders. ‎

The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 and two sureties in like sum.

He stated that the sureties must be members of his family who reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

Mr Emmanuel further said the sureties must present evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Kaduna State government.

He adjourned the case until August 12 for a hearing.
