Nepal to categorise Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan currencies convertible
Nepal’s central bank has announced that it will categorise the Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan currencies as convertible foreign exchanges within the country, a move welcomed by the tourism sector.
“The currencies of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, with which more foreign exchange transactions shall occur, will also be included in the list of convertible currencies,” the Nepal Rastra Bank stated in its Monetary Policy for 2025–26.
Tourism professionals in Nepal have expressed optimism about the decision.
“The central bank’s announcement, if implemented, would help to bring more Bangladeshi tourists to Nepal,” said Ram Bahadur Pahari, team leader at Himalaya Journey Treks & Expedition.
According to the Nepal Tourism Board, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were the fourth and ninth largest sources of foreign tourists in June.
