Gov. Otti inaugurates solar power project at Abia Specialist Hospital

Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Wednesday inaugurated a 150 kVA solar power project at the Abia State Specialist and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia, aimed at providing uninterrupted power for critical health services.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Otti described the project as a significant milestone in the state’s transition to renewable energy and a major step toward building sustainable infrastructure.
He noted that the solar system would serve as the hospital’s primary power source, with the national grid as backup, effectively eliminating the need for generators.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, outlined the project’s technical specifications.
He said the installation included a 430 kWh battery storage system and a 100 kVA inverter system serving the eye and paediatrics clinics.
In addition, he said a 50 kVA system had been dedicated to the hospital’s emergency theatre, ensuring stable power for life-saving procedures and critical medical equipment.
Mr Monday thanked the governor for his support and said the initiative reflected the administration’s commitment to energy reliability and environmental sustainability.
