Suspected gunmen have murdered the Registrar of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) in Ondo State, Imoleayo Adeniran, at his residence.

Mr Adeniran was killed on Thursday at his private home located along the Ondo Road area of Akure, the state capital.

A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Mr Adeniran was allegedly attacked by the assailants at his residence in Akure.

The source said that the university registrar stepped out of his compound to attend to check a strange noise emanating from his house roof when he was accosted by the assailants who emerged from a nearby bush.

He stated, “The assailants allegedly overpowered him and administered an oral liquid substance suspected to be poison before fleeing the scene.’’

The source added that Mr Adeniran was later found lying unconscious in the compound and was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical officer.

According to the source, the corpse of Adeniran was deposited at Divine Haven Mortuary, Akure, while detectives visited the crime scene for further investigation.

The authorities of the university had earlier confirmed the incident.

The state police spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, however, said Mr Adeniran was assassinated.

Mr Ayanlade explained that the police had launched an investigation into the case to unmask the perpetrators of the murder.

He said, “The man died in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday), and I can confirm to you that this was reported at Fanibi Divisional Police Station. We are doing everything possible to unravel circumstances surrounding this case. I mean, we are after those responsible for this case. I can confirm to you that the man was killed. From the information I had at my disposal, two men came out of the bush, and they forced a substance into his mouth.’’
