Court remands man over alleged assault

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Wuse, Abuja, has remanded one Ifeanyi Amadi in the Nigerian Correctional Service Centre for allegedly assaulting a complainant, Okunduwa Jeffery.
The Magistrate, Hafsat Amiru, however, adjourned the case until August 25 for ruling on the oral bail application made by the defence counsel, C.I. Nnemeka and ordered him to file it formally.
The police charged the defendant with criminal assault and mischief.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Earlier, The Prosecuting Counsel, Simpa Ibrahim, told the court that the complainant reported the matter to the Utako Police Station on July 16.
Ibrahim alleged that while the complainant was in Utako, Abuja, to see a friend, the defendant intentionally insulted him and slapped his face.
He added that the defendant tore the complainant’s shirt valued at N12,000 and made him misplace his palm sandals, worth N50,000 while he alerted his gang.
He said that the offences contravened the provisions of sections 262 and 327 of the Penal code.
The defence counsel however, applied for the bail of the defendant citing section 158 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), saying that he would not interfere with investigations.
The prosecution opposed the bail for the likelihood of the defendant jumping bail as he has no fixed address.
Ibrahim added that for public interest, granting bail based on the alleged offence, the victim needed to be protected and urged the court to deny the defendant bail.
