Guard in court for allegedly defrauding friends N15, 500

The magistrate adjourned the case until August 14, for hearing.

A 22-year-old guard, Moses Alaska, was on Thursday, arraigned in a Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly swindling his friends of N15,500.

Alaska, who resides at 1st Avenue Gwarinpa, Abuja, was charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The prosecutor, Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainants, one Dayahu Abubakar, Ibrahim Garba and Abdulsahuru Yahuza of the same address, reported the matter at the Gwarinpa Police Station, on June 30.

Ms Nwachukwu alleged that the defendant on June 29, criminally deceived Abubakar, Garba and Yahuza and collected N8000, N4500 and Yahuza N3000 respectively from them at different points in Gwarinpa and promised to pay them immediately he got home.

She alleged that the defendant collected the money from the complainants and used the same to play bet Naija without their knowledge.

She also alleged that when the complainants demanded their money the defendant dishonesty refused to give them their money as he promised.

The prosecutor added that efforts by the complainants to recover the said money from the defendant proved abortive.

She stated that the offence contravenes the provisions of sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

The Magistrate, Musa Jobbo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

Mr Jobbo ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

He adjourned the case until August 14, for hearing.
