A Nigerian poet and spoken words performer, Bukar Hassan, on Friday, was officially recognized as the United Nations’ Global Advocate for Peace, becoming the first-ever holder of the title under the UN Peace and Security Pillar.

Formerly a recipient of the Sustainable Africa Award at COP28, Ms Hassan’s latest honour was in recognition of her use of poetic skills to promote peace, youth empowerment and gender equality.

Her previous appearances on platforms such as the UN SDG Awards, Ted Talks and World Bank Youth Summit, as well as collaborative projects such as her ‘Peace Begins With Me’ video for the International Day of Peace and a spoken word performance at the 2024 Summit of the Future, earned the appointment.

The Under-Secretary-General for the UN Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, stated that the recognition aimed to promote global awareness on peace and security, with a focus on the role of youth and women in peacemaking.

“The dedication of the Global Advocate’s time and energy to this effort will greatly increase awareness of the peace and security priorities of the United Nations, particularly the vital role of women and youth in advancing inclusive and sustainable peace,” Mr Lacroix said.

Also, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, welcomed Ms Hassan’s recognition, emphasizing the role of arts to inspire action and foster togetherness.

Ms DiCarlo stated that, “Art has the power to move hearts, inspire action, and bring communities together. Through her compelling words and performances, Ms. Bukar has shown how creativity can be a force for peacebuilding, dialogue and inclusion. Her voice will be an important partner in amplifying the UN’s efforts to advance political solutions, empower young people and women, and sustain peace.”

Maximizing her skill as a storyteller and public speaker, Ms Hassan’s role as an advocate is aimed at contributing to the United Nations’ peace promotion efforts, while also participating in campaigns and events, including her first official scheduled performance at the New York City’s SummerStage festival on July 27, alongside artists such as Elida Almeida, Femi Kuti, among others.
