Leon Usigbe, a prominent journalist at the Nigerian Tribune, is dead.

Jide Oyekunle, secretary of the Nigerian Union of Journalists in Abuja, announced this in a statement on Friday. He was 62.

“The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council announces with deep sorrow the sudden passing of our esteemed senior journalist, Dr Leon Usigbe, a veteran reporter who died on Friday, July 25, 2025, following a brief illness,” the statement read.

The statement described Mr Usigbe, born March 13, 1963, as a dedicated journalist with profound contributions to the profession, adding that the deceased’s commitment to truth and integrity would be missed.

“He was a journalist to be proud of—one who upheld the ethics of the profession with dignity and courage. A tireless reporter, he was deeply committed to truth, accuracy, and giving voice to the voiceless. His passion for ethical journalism and storytelling earned him immense respect and admiration,” the statement added.

Prior to his death, Mr Usigbe worked with the Vanguard Newspaper in Katsina, Kaduna and Abuja, covering the House of Representatives before serving as a media aide to former speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari.

The deceased returned to the Vanguard before joining the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja, where he got promoted to Bureau Chief.
