WAFCON Victory: NSC applauds Tinubu’s support for Super Falcons

The National Sports Commission has commended President Bola Tinubu for honouring the Super Falcons with national awards and monetary rewards after their triumph in Morocco.
The Super Falcons came from 2–0 down to defeat Morocco 3–2 in the final, securing their historic 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
In recognition of their achievement, Tinubu announced a $100,000 award for each player and a $50,000 award for each member of the coaching and backroom staff.
Additionally, all players and staff received three-bedroom apartments at the Renewed Hope Housing Estate in Abuja, alongside national honours of Officer of the Order of the Niger.
Chairman of the NSC, Shehu Dikko, in a statement, praised the president’s support for Nigerian sports.
“President Tinubu nurtures and rewards excellence. His unwavering support has given Nigerian sports a renewed sense of direction and purpose. The Commission is thankful for the financial and policy backing the President has offered. Nigerian sports are clearly on the rise with this latest gesture,” he said.
The director-general of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, described the moment as a turning point and thanked Nigerians for their support of the nation’s athletes.
“This marks a new dawn for sports. We appreciate every Nigerian supporting our athletes. Brighter days lie ahead. Our doors remain open to ideas, partnerships, and advice. We are focused on nurturing grassroots talent and achieving success at the elite level.
“Our women’s basketball team is currently in Côte d’Ivoire defending their AfroBasket title, while our youth compete in Algeria’s African School Games. We aim to maintain this winning momentum and continental dominance,” Mr Olapade said.
The NSC reiterated that Nigeria is now led by a President who truly values and invests in sports development.
Mr Tinubu had earlier cleared outstanding payments owed to the Super Eagles from AFCON 2023 and approved pending allowances for the Super Falcons.
The NSC reaffirmed its dedication to advancing Nigerian sports and praised the Super Falcons for being exemplary ambassadors of the nation.
