The Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta, on Tuesday said the hospital had already commenced the federal government subsidised dialysis session for kidney patients.
A journalist who visited the hospital’s dialysis centre on Tuesday said 58 patients paid the sum of N12,000 for dialysis on the hospital’s August records list, cited by the correspondent.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier announced a reduction of the price of a single dialysis session from an average of N50,000 to a new subsidised rate of N12,000.

The price of the procedure was slashed by 76 per cent.

Dorcas Ibeh, a relative who accompanied a patient to the hospital for dialysis, said that they paid N12,000 for the session, adding that the subsidised price would bring financial relief to patients.

“A family friend told us about the subsidised dialysis session at FMC Ebute Metta. We came last week for a session, we are here again this week because my brother need dialysis every week due to his condition.

Also, a patient who pleaded anonymity described the gesture as commendable, urging the government to do more to reduce financial burden for kidney patients and their family.

“What the government is doing in the area of dialysis is good, but it should not end there; kidney patients need more support to survive,” she said.

The acting medical director of the hospital, Saheed Ogunme, said the hospital initially started subsidised dialysis sessions for kidney patients in 2024.

According to him, no fewer than 900 patients benefited from the subsidised dialysis session in 2024.

He disclosed that recently the hospital received two dialysis machines in addition to the existing ones in the hospital, as well as consumables from the government.
