Governor Nwifiru urges NIOB to end building collapse, quackery

Governor Francis Nwifuru has urged the Nigerian Institute of Building to eradicate quackery, which fuels recurrent incidents of building collapse nationwide.
Mr Nwifuru made the call on Wednesday during the 55th Builders Conference and Annual General Meeting in Abakaliki, stressing that the institute has a critical role in curbing the menace.
He lamented that untrained individuals parading as builders have caused tragic collapses, leading to devastating loss of lives and property across many parts of the country.
“This menace damages the reputation of genuine professionals and erodes public trust. The NIOB must urgently act to stamp it out,” the governor said.
He added that stricter monitoring was necessary to ensure that every building project meets the highest structural and safety standards required to protect citizens and communities.
Mr Nwifuru described the conference as an affirmation of the vital role of the building profession in Nigeria’s growth, development, and modernisation across all sectors of society.
“The demands on our profession are rising daily. People expect functional, affordable, durable, and aesthetically pleasing structures that reflect their trust in us. As a builder heading this administration, I will continue creating an enabling environment for professionals through housing schemes, infrastructure expansion, and public-private partnerships,” Mr Nwifuru explained.
Housing minister Ahmed Dangiwa commended Mr Nwifuru for hosting the event and ensuring his personal attendance despite pressing national responsibilities.
He said the conference theme: ‘Advancing builders’ knowledge and skills for effective enforcement of building regulatory laws for sustainable development’ was both timely and aligned with federal priorities.
“This complements President Bola Tinubu’s policies to strengthen professionalism, improve regulation, and expand training, capacity building, and sustainable development across the building industry,” Mr Dangiwa explained.
He further urged the NIOB to work closely with stakeholders to address building collapses and other challenges limiting the growth and stability of the construction sector.
NIOB president, Alderton Ewa, praised Nwifuru for his warmth and commitment to structured development, which underscored his deep understanding of the builders’ mandate.
“Nigeria suffers dire consequences from building collapse and weak enforcement. Without stronger legal frameworks and effective implementation, these challenges will remain,” Mr Ewa warned.
