INEC online registration hits one million

Four weeks into the launch of online pre-registration exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), over one million new registrants have so far been recorded, says INEC.
The portal was launched on June 28, 2021 and physical registration kicked off today across 811 state and local government area offices across the country, and will continue simultaneously with the online pre registration until 30 June, 2022 when the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise will be suspended.
Out of the 1,006,661 registrants, 740,063 are young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 34.
The total number of registered voters in Nigeria is 1,135,395 including applications for voter transfer, request for replacement of PVCs and update of voter information Record.
Surge in number of registrants in Osun State continues with 259,450 registrants followed by Edo state with 98,286, Bayelsa 63,250 and Lagos 61,991 respectively.
INEC spokesman Festus Okoye, in a press statement on Monday, said the number of fresh registrants as of 7:00 a.m. on Monday rose to over 1 million.
The locations of centers for physical registration have been uploaded on INEC’s websites and it’s not meant for Nigerians who are already registered as voters, according to INEC.
Also, registering twice is a punishable offense under the electoral Act of Nigeria.
Mr Okoye urged citizens to locate the various registration centers across the country and register.
“The right to vote begins with registration of voters. Thus, as we enter the next phase of CVR exercise, we once again appeal to all citizens who wish to register to approach any of the commissions state or local government offices nationwide to do so, “ Mr Okoye said.
