His Royal Majesty, Saidu Saliu, the Ohimege-Igu of Koton-Karfe, Kogi, says unity in diversity among Nigerians is key to peace and national development.

The traditional ruler made the remarks at an award ceremony organised by the Kogi branch of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU’s) Alumni Association, held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Lokoja, on Sunday.

According to the traditional ruler, Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and social divides need to uphold the principle of unity in diversity to turn around the economy of the country.

“This unity in diversity is the defining philosophy of ABU, Zaria, which remains Nigeria’s most cosmopolitan university, embodying the spirit of inclusiveness and togetherness.

“I can proudly say that ABU, Zaria, is one of the most cosmopolitan universities in Nigeria because if you analyse its population, you will find that the Hausas are actually in the minority.

“That is the unique story of ABU, it brings people together beyond ethnic boundaries,” he said.

Mr Saliu emphasised that Nigeria, and Kogi in particular, must draw inspiration from that philosophy to strengthen peaceful coexistence and promote development.

“Kogi is multi-ethnic and multi-tribal. Our strength lies in diversity. This spirit of unity, which defines ABU, is exactly what Nigeria needs at this crucial moment.”

Gov Ahmed Ododo, who was represented by his director of protocol, Suleiman Ibrahim, expressed felicitation with the association on the occasion.

Mr Ododo said that about 50 per cent of his lieutenants in governance are ABU graduates and thanked the university for producing such persons, who are helping him to reinvigorate his administration in its quest to transform the state.

In his goodwill message, president of the ABU Alumni Association Worldwide, Mamman Kontagora, said ABU has the largest alumni network in Nigeria.

Mr Kontagora urged citizens to partner with the federal government in developing the education sector, stressing that “government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of university education.

“We must, therefore, rise to support our alma mater in tangible ways.”

Mohammed Sagir, Kogi chairman of the association, highlighted the significant contributions of ABU alumni to governance, education, security, and the economy of the state.

Mr Sagir said the branch has produced high-ranking public officials, academics, entrepreneurs, and political leaders, including former governor Yahaya Bello and the late deputy governor, Patrick Adava.
