Super Eagles arrive in South Africa ahead of decisive World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana
The Super Eagles have landed in Bloemfontein, South Africa, preparing for a critical 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana on September 9.
Nigeria’s arrival follows a commanding 1–0 win over Rwanda in Uyo, where substitute Tolu Arokodare’s spectacular overhead finish secured all three points and moved the team up to third in Group C.
The significance of the trip is heightened by Nigeria’s current standing. South Africa lead Group C with 16 points, followed by Benin with 11 and Nigeria with 10, while Rwanda remain in fourth place on 8 points. Only the group winner qualifies directly for the World Cup. The Super Eagles will need to overturn the gap if they’re to revive their hopes of securing a spot in North America next year.
Adding to the mounting tension, Nigeria’s talismanic forward Victor Osimhen, who started against Rwanda, did not make the trip to Bloemfontein. The striker was forced off with a shin bruise in the first half in Uyo and, despite initial uncertainty, has now been officially ruled out of the match. The squad departed without him, while he returned to Galatasaray for further assessment.
Despite the absence of Osimhen, coach Eric Chelle’s side remains focused. Officials expect team training to take place at the Free State Stadium ahead of the crucial clash.
A positive result in Bloemfontein could keep their World Cup dream alive; any slip-up could spell its demise.
