Ange Postecoglou to succeed Nuno Espirito as Nottingham Forest head coach
Ange Postecoglou is set to take charge of Nottingham Forest, agreeing to a deal to succeed Nuno Espirito Santo as the club’s head coach.
The contract is set to run until summer 2027, with all terms finalised. A formal announcement from the club is expected shortly.
The appointment of the Greek-Australian manager came hours after Forest sacked Portuguese coach Nuno Espirito Santo on Tuesday, September 9, and discussions between Postecoglou and the club intensified for the coach to take charge.
The official statement from Forest said: “Nottingham Forest Football Club confirms that, following recent circumstances, Nuno Espirito Santo has today been relieved of his duties as head coach. The club thanks Nuno for his contribution during a very successful era at the City Ground, in particular his role in the 2024/25 season, which will forever be remembered fondly in the history of the club.’’
Nuno’s exit came after three games into the new season, ending 21 months at Forest.
During his time in charge, he led Forest to their best Premier League finish since 1995, securing seventh place and qualification for the Europa League for the first time in 30 years.
However, tensions with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and hierarchy over transfer strategies and team integration, increased by a 3-0 home defeat to West Ham, led to the decision to part ways.
Forest had spent nearly £196m in the summer window, but disagreements over recruitment proved decisive.
Postecoglou has managed over 567 matches across his career, with 297 wins, 101 draws, and 169 losses. His achievements include leading Celtic to back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles and guiding Tottenham Hotspur to UEFA Europa League glory in 2025.
He arrives at the City Ground following a two-season stint in North London with Tottenham Hotspur, where he led the club to European glory, winning the 2025 UEFA Europa League Final by defeating Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao.
The feat earned him a special award in Greece for being the first coach of Greek origin to win a European trophy in men’s football.
Interestingly, Postecoglou was fired from Spurs just 16 days after lifting the Europa League trophy.
