Final year Nasarawa student faces prosecution for allegedly abandoning newborn in bush

The police command in Nasarawa State has detained a final-year student and nursing mother for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby girl in a bush in the Akwanga, Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, who confirmed the arrest and detention to journalists on Thursday in Lafia, added that the suspect would be prosecuted on conclusion of investigations.
Mr Nansel said, “The mother of the baby has been identified and arrested. The Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia, for thorough investigation and prosecution.’’
The mother of the abandoned baby was identified as a final year National Certificate in Education student of the College of Education Akwanga.
She allegedly abandoned the newborn wrapped in a cloth in the bush near Hope Academy Primary School on AA Koto Street, Akwanga
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the baby was found alive on Wednesday and reported to the police for appropriate action.
The discovery of the abandoned baby sparked outrage among residents, with many expressing shock over the incident.
