Nepal’s first female prime minister, Sushila Karki, has promised to hand over power to the incoming government in six months.

‎The 73-year old former chief justice stated this in a meeting on Sunday, two days after her appointment due to the current political violence and disruption in the country.

‎Ms Karki stated, “We will not stay here more than six months in any situation, we will complete our responsibilities and pledge to hand over to the next parliament and ministers.’’

‎Ms Karki described her new role “as one compelled on her to accept as a result of the voices from the streets,” noting that she did not wish for the job.

‎The interim leader was appointed after intense negotiations by army chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel and President Ram Chandra Paudel, including representatives of “Gen Z” youth protest movement.

‎She is known for having a clean image and upholding fairness while serving as chief justice of the country.

‎Nepal has been thrown in political instability and violence in recent times after demands for a corruption free government from its citizens, and nascent group called the ‘Gen z’ youths movement.

‎The protest which began last Monday, escalated leading to the torching of parliament and key government buildings.

‎Ms Karki is faced with the task of restoring law and order in Nepal, including rebuilding the country’s parliament and other key buildings destroyed during the protest.

‎She is also expected to quell the growing agitation of the Nepali ‘Gen Z’ youth movement and reassure them of a clean and corrupt free government during her service to the nation.
