Poland’s new president, Karol Nawrocki, will arrive in Berlin on Tuesday for his inaugural visit, where he is expected to press Germany on the issue of World War II reparations.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will welcome Mr Nawrocki with military honours at Bellevue Palace, followed by bilateral talks.

Mr Nawrocki will also meet Chancellor Friedrich Merz for further discussions.

A spokesman for Mr Nawrocki confirmed the nationalist president will “definitely address” Poland’s long-standing demand for reparations, a topic reignited by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, to which Nawrocki is closely aligned.

A 2022 parliamentary report had estimated the damages at €1.3 trillion.

Germany maintains that all reparations claims were legally resolved decades ago, a position that has been repeatedly reaffirmed by Steinmeier.

Despite the tensions, Berlin emphasized the strategic importance of maintaining strong ties with Warsaw.

“German-Polish relations are truly a central cornerstone of our entire foreign policy,” said deputy government spokesman Steffen Meyer.
