Red Cross, UNICEF, NEMA conduct flood simulation in Jigawa

The Nigeria Red Cross Society (NRCS) has executed a flood simulation response at Hadiyo riverine community in Auyo Local Government Area of Jigawa.
The UNICEF funded project is being implemented in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (JISEMA).
Timothy Yohanna, disaster management coordinator, NRCS, said this during the simulation, on Thursday in Auyo.
He underscored the imperative of readiness in the face of recurring flood disasters in the area.
Mr Yohanna said the simulation is sequel to the 2025 Seasonal Predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), and the Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA), which identified Jigawa, including Auyo as high risk flood zones.
He said the simulation was designed to test existing emergency plans and protocols, identify gaps and enhance coordination among stakeholders.
Nura Abdullahi, head of Kano Territorial Office, NEMA, charged the participants to use the knowledge and skills gained for disaster response efforts.
He said the responsibility of disaster prevention does not rest with the government alone, hence residents of the state, especially those living in flood prone areas, to heed to the early warnings, cooperate with authorities and imbibe personal precautions.
Hannafi Yakubu, executive secretary, SEMA, said the simulation has increased disaster preparedness among communities.
Also, Usman Ibrahim, chairman, Auyo Local Government Council, commended the gesture, and reiterated commitment to apply the lessons learnt to enhance emergency response services.
