Arsenal hold Manchester City to 1–1 draw at Emirates

Gameweek five of the English Premier League concluded with late drama as Arsenal denied Manchester City a victory, as a late equaliser kept the Gunners’ title hopes alive.
A high-stakes Sunday fixture featured two of England’s top Premier League teams, Arsenal and Manchester City, clashing at the Emirates Stadium, ending in a draw after a tense battle.
The Gunners fought hard to avoid defeat, aiming to maintain their challenge for the league title race, while Manchester City sought to close the gap on leaders Liverpool.
Manchester City struck first just nine minutes into the first half with a goal from Erling Haaland, who capitalised on a high-pressure counter from Arsenal. The quick turnover released Tijjani Reijnders, whose pass allowed Haaland to beat the goalkeeper and put the visitors ahead.
Despite being a goal down, the hosts pushed hard, holding a tidy ball possession, matched with a brilliant attacking force from the Gunners. And then, cometh the hour, cometh the man. Brazilian international Gabriel Martinelli, fresh from securing a late Champions League winner against Athletic Bilbao with a goal and an assist, produced another moment of brilliance. A perfectly lofted through ball from Eberechi Eze allowed Martinelli to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma and level the score in the dying minutes of the match.
Neither side will be satisfied with the draw, as they fall five points behind leaders Liverpool after matchday five. Both now turn to EFL Cup action in midweek, Arsenal away to Port Vale and City at Huddersfield, before Arsenal visit Newcastle and City host Burnley in their next Premier League fixtures.
Sunday’s other fixtures also ended in draws, with Sunderland battling back with 10 men to hold Aston Villa, keeping the newcomers in the top ten and denying Villa their first win of the season, while Newcastle’s trip to Bournemouth also finished level.
