Edo By-election: Councilors receive certificates of return

The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) presented certificates of return to 63 elected councilors on Monday in Benin, following the September 20 by-elections.
EDSIEC chairman, Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, represented by Ikhuoriah Solomon, urged the elected councilors to properly represent the people.
Mr Aifuobhokhan congratulated them on their victory and emphasised the importance of their roles in serving and leading their various wards.
Meanwhile, the PDP has stated that it will contest the by-election in court.
The party stated that Justice Mary Itsueli of the Edo High Court, Benin, had on September 16 restrained the state electoral body from conducting the by-election because the tenure of the affected councillors remained valid until September 2026.
Ms Itsueli had ordered EDSIEC and the Edo government “to stay further actions in conducting the by-election.”
The electoral body, however, went on to conduct the by-elections, citing the resolution of the state’s House of Assembly, which declared those seats vacant for alleged absenteeism.
