Drycleaner in court over alleged theft of electronics worth N1.5 million

A 31-year-old dry cleaner, Sunday Williams, on Wednesday appeared before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing electronics valued N1.5 million.
Mr Williams, a resident of Narayi Kaduna, is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on September 20 at Amina Yakawo Estate, Bayan Dutse Kaduna.
According to Mr Leo, the defendant and two others at large, broke into the apartment of Gabriel Uche and stole electronics worth N1.5 million.
He alleged that the defendant and his accomplices scaled the fence to break into the apartment and steal valuables while the complainant was away.
The prosecutor added that the defendant was arrested by a police team on patrol while others escaped.
He said the offences contravened the provisions of sections 59 and 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
“Section 217 stipulate seven years imprisonment for stealing if found guilty,” he said.
The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Mr Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State government.
He adjourned the case until October 30 for hearing.
