Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola has called on maritime stakeholders to safeguard the opportunities of the ocean for the benefit of future generations.

Mr Oyetola made the call on Thursday in Lagos during the 2025 World Maritime Day celebration, with the theme “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity.”

He noted that the ocean covers over 70 per cent of the planet, generates between 50 and 80 per cent of the earth’s oxygen, provides food and livelihoods for billions of people, and carries more than 80 per cent of global trade.

The minister stated that the federal government remains committed to advancing marine governance, modernising port infrastructure, and strengthening regional and international partnerships for ocean preservation.

“The blue economy represents a new frontier of innovation, prosperity, and inclusive growth.

“From renewable ocean energy and marine biotechnology to sustainable aquaculture, the opportunities are vast.

“Our vision is to harness these opportunities to position the sector as a leading contributor to Nigeria’s economy, reducing dependence on oil and gas and driving diversification in line with national priorities,” Mr Oyetola said.

He added that Nigeria had continued to play an active role in global maritime dialogues and policy development for responsible and equitable ocean use.

The minister also disclosed Nigeria’s bid to return to Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council, noting that the country had already secured strong support from member states across continents.

“Returning to the IMO Council will reaffirm Nigeria’s leadership in the global maritime community and our commitment to shaping decisions that guide the sector,” he said.

Olufemi Oloruntola, permanent secretary, Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, stressed that the maritime industry is a key driver of global economic output, accounting for over 90 per cent of trade.

“We are duty-bound to be intentional in protecting the ocean and its resources, knowing that every member of the global community directly or indirectly benefits from it,” he said.

Similarly, Dayo Mobereola, director-general, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), highlighted the importance of oceans as a source of livelihood for nearly three billion people worldwide.

He said Nigeria, blessed with vast maritime endowments, must prioritise environmental stewardship, maritime safety, and security.

“The plastic pollution crisis is being tackled through our Marine Litter and Plastic Action Plan. We are also implementing IMO frameworks to promote a healthy marine environment.

“On security, the Deep Blue Project has become a game changer for Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea,” Mr Mobereola said.

He, however, noted that the blue economy remains underfunded globally, with Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) facing an annual financing gap of approximately $150 billion.

Mr Mobereola called for stronger private sector participation, supported by appropriate regulatory frameworks and incentive structures.
