Nigeria’s Flying Eagles lost 0-1 to Norway in their opening match of the 24th FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile on Monday.

The Norwegians scored from a controversial ninth-minute penalty, which the Nigerians contested.

The Flying Eagles dominated the match, particularly in the second half, but failed to capitalise on their chances.

Kparobo Arierhi came close in the 47th minute, but his left-footed shot drifted just wide with the goalkeeper beaten.

In the 63rd minute, Tahir Maigana’s effort struck the base of the upright.

The two-time runners-up continued to press, but Norway defended deep and blocked several attempts.

In the 71st minute, Nasiru Salihu’s rising shot went over the crossbar.

Maigana again tried from distance in the 83rd minute, but narrowly missed the target.

NAN also reports that Nigeria’s appeal for two penalties in the second half was turned down.

The Flying Eagles face Saudi Arabia in their second group match on Thursday.
