Three killed as anti-government protests enter sixth day in Morocco
Three people have been killed as anti-government protests sparked by huge spending on the 2030 World Cup entered their sixth day in Morocco.
The police, in a statement on Thursday, said its men “were forced to use their service weapon, within the framework of legitimate self-defence, to repel an assault” by protesters.
It added that protesters were killed “in an attempt to seize the ammunition, equipment, and service weapons of the Gendarmerie personnel.”
Angry youths, mobilised through social media by a group known as Gen Z 212, stormed the streets of Morocco last Saturday, berating the government’s huge expenditure on the 2030 World Cup and calling for improved schools, hospitals, and other social services.
Morocco’s Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, in a televised address on Thursday, said his government is open to “dialogue and discussion within institutions and public spaces.”
Last week, youth-led bloody protests in Nepal caused a government collapse as irate demonstrators hunted down government officials during nationwide demonstrations.
