ASUSS lauds Governor Mutfwang over new teachers’ retirement act
The Plateau chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools has commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for approving the Teachers’ Retirement Act 2022.
Chundung Rapwong, the chairman of ASUSS in Plateau, gave the commendation during an event organised to commemorate the 2025 World Teachers’ Day on Tuesday in Jos.
The Teachers’ Retirement Act 2022 has extended the compulsory retirement age for teachers to 65 or 40 years of service.
The legislation overrides the general public service rule of 60 or 35 years of service for teachers.
According to Mr Rapwong, the move will not only address the shortage of teachers in the state but will also improve retention.
“The primary reason for enacting the law is to combat the growing shortage of teachers in Nigeria by increasing their service tenure. By retaining experienced teachers for longer, the Act aims to enhance the overall quality of the teaching profession.
“The legislation is viewed as a commitment to improving and dignifying the teaching profession in Nigeria. So, we are grateful to the governor for approving the retirement Act for our teachers in Plateau,” she said.
In a paper presentation, Nehemiah Sunday called on teachers to collaborate with their students, school management, and their communities towards achieving a better education system.
Mr Sunday, principal of Government Secondary School, Dorowa Tsoho, Barkin Ladi LGA, spoke on the topic ‘The Dignity, Plight and Future of Teachers in Plateau’.
“It is, however, sad that the welfare of our teachers has been neglected, but we will continue to advocate for a better atmosphere for our educational system to thrive,” he said
Mr Mutfwang expressed the government’s deep commitment towards the education sector. He added that the state government would continue to prioritise the welfare and well-being of all workers, particularly teachers who have dedicated their lives to shaping future leaders.
The governor, however, urged teachers to demonstrate commitment and dedication to their duties at all times.
