The Federal Road Safety Corps impounded 151 vehicles in Zamfara during a special patrol in September aimed at curbing traffic code violations.

Sector commander Aliyu Ma’aji disclosed this in an interview on Wednesday in Gusau.

Mr Ma’aji said the operation targeted overloading, mixed loading, and excessive speeding, among other offences. He noted that 75 vehicles were seized for attempting to bribe personnel on duty.

He explained that the vehicles were charged for both corruption and traffic violations. Plans are underway to establish a mobile court to ensure the prompt prosecution of cases.

According to him, 76 other vehicles were impounded for various traffic offences.

Zamfara, he added, serves as a gateway to Sokoto, Kebbi, and the Republic of Niger, with vehicles frequently transiting the state.

Ma’aji noted that most overloaded vehicles did not originate within the state, making it difficult to trace their bases. He urged motorists to desist from the practice or face the law.

He stressed that the command would remain vigilant and continue to apprehend offenders to enhance road safety.

A driver, Habibu Yari, whose vehicle was impounded for being overloaded, stated that he was traveling from Kano to Jega in Kebbi when he was stopped.

Mr Yari said he had paid a fine into the government treasury and received guidance from the FRSC on the dangers of overloading, which changed his behaviour.

He added that all stakeholders must join hands to reduce road crashes in the state.
