At least 27 people were killed in a clash between Hamas militias and armed members of the Dughmush family, a prominent clan, in Gaza.

This infighting ensued between the two camps after the ceasefire talks that saw Israeli forces withdraw troops from Gaza.

On Sunday, the BBC reported the clash between Hamas and the Dughmush clan as “one of the most violent internal confrontations since the end of major Israeli operations in the enclave.”

Citing witnesses, the newspaper said, “Masked Hamas gunmen exchanged fire with clan fighters near the city’s Jordanian hospital.”

It added, “A senior official in the Hamas-run interior ministry said security units surrounded them and engaged in heavy fighting to detain them. The ministry said eight of its members were killed in ‘an armed assault by a militia’.”

According to medical sources, about 19 Dughmush clan members and eight Hamas fighters have been killed since the bloody infighting between the two camps began on Saturday.

This clash is not the first between the two warring camps. However, it comes as Hamas militias return from their hiding to exert control over Gaza after Israeli forces left the territory.
