The Delta government on Monday joined the international community in commemorating World Statistics Day.
The event, celebrated every five years, recognises the vital role of statisticians and the importance of quality data in shaping development policies and decisions around the world, according to a statement by the director of statistics, Nkechi Maduemezia.
Ms Maduemezia said that the critical role of statistics in governance, planning, and service delivery could not be overemphasised. She described statistics as the foundation of public policies that impacted everyday life, including healthcare, education, infrastructure, and employment.
She, therefore, called on residents of the Delta to support the data collection process by providing honest and accurate information to statisticians and data professionals across the state.
“We are calling on the people of the state, from rural communities to urban centres, to take ownership of the data collection process. Providing truthful and accurate information is not just a civic duty; it is a pathway to better governance, targeted development, and an improved quality of life,” she said.
The Delta official stressed that quality data was essential for effective policy development and equitable allocation of public resources.
She said that since the establishment of the Day and the first celebration on October 20, 2010, by the United Nations Statistical Commission, the event had received global recognition.
Ms Maduemezia said that 103 countries now celebrate the day, while 51 African nations commemorate African Statistics Day annually on November 18.
