Human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has condemned President Bola Tinubu led government over the arrest and remand of Aloy Ejimakor, legal counsel to leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, and Emmanuel Kanu, in Kuje Prison for their involvement in #FreeNnamdiKanu protest.


In a statement on Tuesday, the human rights organisation said, “their arrest and plan to arraign them shows a desperate attempt to silence peaceful dissent. Remanding them in Kuje Prison marks a further and chilling escalation of Nigerian government’s relentless efforts to undermine freedom of assembly.’’

It added, “What President Bola Tinubu’s government is subjecting Aloy Ejimakor and Prince Emmanuel Kanu to comes in the context of a much wider crackdown on civic space. This travesty of justice must stop. Nigerian authorities must immediately and unconditionally release lawyer Aloy Ejimakor and Prince Emmanuel Kanu and to drop the bizarre plan to subject them to sham trial based on fabricated charges.”

Mr Ejimakor, arrested during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest on Monday, was remanded in Kuje Prison on Tuesday.

The lawyer, in a post on Tuesday, said  the Magistrate refused to listen to their submissions and insisted on remanding them till Friday.’’

He stated, “For context: Keep in mind that they bypassed several Magistrates’ courts in town and headed to this one in Kuje.’’

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement accused Mr Ejimakor of unethical conduct by participating in the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest led by rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, on Monday.
