Speeding, violation of traffic rules liable for increased accidents in “Ember Months’’: FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said accidents on the highways are mostly caused by impatience, speeding and flouting of traffic rules and regulations,
The corps added that the situation is aggravated during the “Ember Months,’’ being the peak of activities and high vehicular movements across the country.
The FRSC Unit Commander in Okitipupa, Oluseyi Abah, spoke during the 2025 Ember Month Motorcade Enlightenment and Sensitisation Campaign at Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The campaign is themed: “Take Responsibility for Your Safety, Stop Distracted Driving.”
Addressing commercial drivers and other road users at the event, Mrs Abbah warned against speeding and violating other traffic rules and regulations while driving on the highways during the period.
“This is the end of the year when citizens, especially drivers and road users, think they can make up for what they have lost since January, which causes speeding and traffic rules violations which may eventually lead to crashes. I advise them against speeding, receiving calls while driving. They should ensure they obey all traffic rules and regulations to be safe for their loved ones,’’ Mrs Abah said.
She said the motorcade sensitisation and enlightenment was a directive from the corps marshal, to sensitise and enlighten drivers and other road users.
On his part, Chairman, Okitipupa LGA, Andrew Ogunsakin, advised residents to abide by all traffic rules and regulations, saying that any accident recorded would affect, at least, one family in the council.
Mr Ogunsakin, represented by Head of Local Government Administration, Iyabode Wole-Awolore, also urged drivers to always take safety precautions at all times to avoid crashes.
“I commend the FRSC for the sensitisation programme, and I implore our drivers and other road users to always take all safety precautions for them to be alive for their families,’’ Mr Ogunsakin said.
The sensitisation motorcade moved from the local government secretariat to New Garage, enroute the Old Garage to Okitipupa Main Market through Igbokoda road.
Members of FRSC Special Marshals, Road Safety Clubs, National Youths Service Corps, officers from the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun Corps and other law enforcement agencies participated in the campaign.
