Strike: Enugu doctors give Gov. Ugwuanyi conditions
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) says it has taken a 10-point resolution for implementation by the Enugu government through the teaching hospital authorities.
This is contained in a communiqué issued to journalists on Tuesday at the end of the association’s emergency general meeting on August 2.
The communiqué signed by the association’s president Emmanuel Edoga and general secretary Chukwunonso Ofonere urged the hospital management to employ at least 50 new house officers.
The statement added that the hospital management should urgently employ new residents in surgery, psychiatry, anaesthesia, ophthalmology, paediatrics, internal medicine, radiology, otorhinolaryngologyobstetrics and gynaecology.
“Third, that the management of ESUTH Parklane should properly place the remaining stagnated medical officers in terms of seniority and arrears paid,” stated the statement. “Fourth, that the management of ESUTH Parklane should pay outstanding advancement arrears owed our members.”
Other demands included the immediate review of the “procedures and terms for refunds of update and exam expenses, to closely align with the provisions of Medical Residency Training Funds.”
“That the Management of ESUTH Parklane should commence the process of review of hazard allowance for all health workers in the hospital, to align with what is being proposed for Federal tertiary hospitals,” noted the association. “That the Chief Medical Director should please desist from issuing queries to the leadership of ARD-ESUTH for lawful actions taken by the Congress of the association. Such queries are considered highly provocative.
It further explained that its doctors would “continue to work tirelessly to ensure that ESUT-TH Parklane stands tall as a centre for excellence in healthcare, not just east of the Niger but south of the Sahara.”
The ARD of ESUTH-TH, on August 2, joined their colleagues nationwide in the ongoing resident doctors’ strike that had entered its second day.
