Despite deadly violence, Tanzanian govt says election transparent, peaceful

President Samia Hassan of Tanzania has said the country’s election, marred by internet shutdown and violent protests, was credible.
A statement through Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, Tanzania’s Foreign Affairs minister, on Monday, said, “The integrity of this year’s election is attributed to reforms identified and implemented by all stakeholders, including political parties and civil society organizations.”
“The government of the United Republic of Tanzania wishes to inform the international media that the general elections held on 29 October 2025 were conducted with utmost transparency and adherence to democratic principles,” the statement said.
The Tanzanian government further claimed, “Citizens exercised their constitutional right by voting peacefully. On 1 November 2025, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results of the general elections and declared H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan the winner of the presidential election by a landslide of 97.66 per cent.”
Mrs Hassan’s swearing-in ceremony was held on Monday at the State House in the capital, Dodoma, under tight security, against Tanzania’s tradition of holding such ceremonies in a stadium.
Reactions have trailed Tanzania’s election, in which major opposition candidates, Tundu Lissu of the CHADEMA party and Luhaga Mpina of the Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT-Wazalendo), were barred from contesting.
The election on Wednesday was marred by internet and social media shutdowns, as well as violent protests across Tanzania. The CHADEMA opposition party said over 700 people were killed by police during the election protests.
Jeanne Shaheen, a U.S. senator and member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, on Monday said the reelection of Mrs Hassan of Tanzania was fraudulent.
The Southern African Development Committee Electoral Observation Mission, Amnesty International, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, the European Union, and the UK, Canadian, and Norwegian missions in Tanzania have all expressed concern over the election.
