Democratic Party’s socialist and Marxist lawmaker, Zohran Mamdani, has emerged victorious in the New York City mayoral election.

The 34-year-old politician, known for his left-wing politics and advocacy for working-class New Yorkers, won after a record turnout of voters.

Mr Mamdani’s victory spanned a broad coalition of voters, uniting the gentrified neighborhoods of Brooklyn with the diverse, immigrant-dominated enclaves of Queens.

His campaign focused on affordable housing, wealth redistribution, police reform, and expanded social welfare.

A longtime community organiser and son of Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani, Mr Mamdani’s rise from a state assemblyman representing Astoria to the city’s top political office has been described as a defining moment for progressive politics in America.

Mr Mamdani’s win is expected to send ripples through the Democratic Party establishment, testing how far left-leaning ideals can go in governing one of the world’s most influential cities.
