Nigerian juniors shine at Lagos ITF tournament
Nigeria’s Success Ogunjobi defeated India’s Samaira Kohili 6-0, 7-5 on Wednesday at the ongoing ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors J30 tournament in Ikeja.
Khadijat Mohammad eased past British player Omoyinka Ayinla 6-0, 6-0 in a dominant display.
Ohunene Yakubu beat fellow Nigerian Emmanuella Kwange 6-1, 6-1, while Zimbabwe’s Rutendo Tom defeated Nenrot Suwa 6-1, 6-4.
Bright Emmanuel edged Toluwalashe Agunbiade 6-3, 6-4, and Goodnews Aina beat Osaherun Osayimwen 6-1, 6-3.
Zimbabwe’s Rutendo Mavhenyengwa also claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Gloria Samuel.
The tournament continues to thrill fans with standout performances from young players.
The competition, which runs from November 3 to 15, offers junior athletes a chance to earn ranking points and vital experience.
Boys and girls displayed strong passion and confidence, dispatching opponents in tightly contested matches.
Spectators cheered enthusiastically, applauding and celebrating promising performances throughout the day.
Supporters also praised organisers for bringing world-class junior tennis action to Lagos.
The week-long event has attracted strong interest as rising stars battle for ranking points and honours.
The tournament is organised by the Tiger Tennis Foundation, owned by Paul Moses.
The foundation provides a platform for young players to showcase their talents and grow in the sport.
Moses noted that the aim is to promote tennis development in Nigeria by supporting junior events and creating pathways for global competition.
Speaking during an interview, the tournament’s official restringer, Wasiu Oladeyi, highlighted the importance of string tension and racket condition.
“Restringing is very important. You must get the tension right,” he said, noting the strings affect performance.
He stressed proper racket maintenance for optimal results, ensuring all athletes’ rackets meet performance standards.
“My role is to get every racket just right,” he added.
The finals will take place on November 15, with players expected to gain experience and recognition.
