NEMA distributes relief materials to flood victims in Akwa Ibom federal constituency
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), under the Federal Government Special Intervention, has distributed essential relief materials to 2025 flood victims in the Ibiono Ibom/Itu Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State.
Items distributed included 300 bags of parboiled rice (25 kg), 300 bags of garri (25 kg) and 300 cartons of spaghetti.
Others are 30 cartons of vegetable oil, 30 cartons of tomato paste, and 30 cartons of seasoning cubes, as well as 30 bags of iodised salt.
In her remarks, Head of Operations, NEMA, in Akwa Ibom Sttae, who sympathised with the victims, Mmandu Aisueni, urged the people to accept the relief materials from the federal government with gratitude.
Ms Aisueni, represented by Head of Relief and Rehabilitation, Akpakpan Victor, said that the gesture aimed to provide immediate succour to the victims as they rebuild their lives after the flood incident.
She said that the relief response was based on a previously conducted on-the-spot assessment of the damage in the federal constituency and subsequent approval of the Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar.
“It is with mixed emotions that we gather here today, saddened by the devastating impact of the recent flooding, yet hopeful as we come together to provide much-needed relief to our people. The effects of the flooding have been deeply felt in these communities, disrupting property and livelihoods, leaving many in urgent need.
“Today, we are distributing these relief items not just as a gesture of support but as a demonstration of our shared humanity and commitment to your recovery,” she said.
Ms Aisueni assured the people that NEMA would continue to work with stakeholders to ensure everyone’s safety in the state and country.
On his part, the member representing the Ibiono Ibom/Itu federal constituency, Ime Okon, expressed gratitude to NEMA and the federal government for their prompt response and support to the people.
He decried the severe hardship his constituents have faced as a result of the flooding and emphasised the need for sustained assistance to help them fully recover.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Emmanuel Akra, thanked the federal government and NEMA for the gesture.
He expressed delight over the gesture, saying that the relief items would go a long way in cushioning the effect of the flooding.
