Fire service sensitises Kugbo timber traders to fire safety, prevention

The FCT Federal Fire Service (FFS) has sensitised
traders of Kugbo Timber Market to fire safety measures to adopt in preventing and tackling outbreak as harmattan season begins.
The training was carried out on Wednesday by the FCT FFS Fire Inspection, Investigation and Enforcement (IIE) unit, after inspecting the Kugbo Timber Market in Abuja.
The unit’s Head, Chief Superintendent of Fire (CSF) Chinweuba Akam, said the training was necessitated by fire incidents that occur during dry season.
He said, “Aas you know, the harmattan season is characterised with fire incidents and that’s why we chose to educate traders about it, so they would be prepared. We are also carrying out this training because of the materials they deal with. If you look around this place, you will see that almost all what they are using is in class A fire.
“They are dealing with class A fire materials such as solid materials, timber, sawdust, fabrics, among others, and these are easily combustible.”
The IIE head said that traders would also be taught the different types of fire extinguishers and how to appropriately use them in tackling fire.
Mr Akam said that after surveying the market, the service decided to map out spots where fire aid fighting equipment should be installed.
He added that orientation on the appropriate firefighting equipment to purchase would be recommended.
According to him, the unit being in charge of fire safety education and enforcement, will continue to sensitise and inspect marketers to ensure compliance.
“If anyone is found proving stubborn or going against the laws that are guiding fire safety, we will force the person to do the needful,” he stated.
The command began sensitisation on fire safety in several parts of the territory and some offices such as the the Nigeria Customs, FCT Command.
