The Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan on Tuesday sentenced a 28-year-old man to three months’ imprisonment for stealing four pieces of dry meat and eggs.

The court president, S.M Akintayo, convicted and sentenced him after he had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretence and stealing.

Delivering judgment, the court held that, based on the defendant’s guilty plea and the overwhelming evidence tendered by the prosecution, he was found guilty as charged.

Ms Akintayo consequently sentenced the defendant to a concurrent term of three months’ imprisonment on both counts.

The court, however, gave the convict the option of one month of community service.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Ayodele Ayeni, told the court that the convict committed the offence on November 23, at Aduragbemi in Ayegun, Ibadan.

He told the court that the convict defrauded a complainant, one Aduke Opeloyeru.

According to him, the convict fraudulently obtained four pieces of dry meat, popularly called “Kund,” valued at N1,000; four raw eggs valued at N1,000; and a cash sum of N1,000 from the said complainant.

He said the total value of items obtained from the complainant is N3,000.

The prosecutor told the court that the convict had requested Ms Opeloyeru’s account details, promising to transfer the said indebted sum.

He told the court that the complainant got a fake credit alert, while the convict disappeared.

According to the prosecution, however, the convict ran out of luck when he was eventually apprehended by people who knew him.

The offences contravene the provisions of sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code Law of Oyo State, 2000.
