The police in Lagos have arraigned a 35-year-old businessman, Bethel Okafor, before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining N350,000 under false pretences.

Okafor is standing trial before Magistrate, Lateef Layeni, on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, ASP Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in July, at Imude Road, Oto-Awori, Ojo.

He alleged that the defendant obtained the sum of N350,000 from one Michael Nwanegbo, with a promise to help purchase two aluminum doors meant for his building under construction.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant failed to produce the said doors, but allegedly converted the money to his personal use without the  consent of the complainant.

He said that the defendant was eventually arrested by the police.

The offences contravene the provisions of Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N300,000 with one responsible surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case until December 10 for mention.
