The National Association of Persons with Physical Disabilities (NAPWPD), Abia State chapter, on Thursday in Aba, commended Governor Alex Otti, for his efforts in creating an inclusive society.

The group also called for job opportunities and empowerment programmes for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), to support their economic independence.

The NAPWPD is the umbrella body for persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

The Abia Chairman of NAPWPD, Iroabuchi Alozie, made the call, during inauguration of new leadership for the Aba North Local Government (LGA) chapter of the group.

He said that Mr Otti’s administration exhibited commitment to inclusivity and disability rights, following establishment of the Abia State Disability Commission.

According to him, it is among other initiatives by the state, aimed at improving the quality of life for PWDs.

According to Mr Alozie, the government also initiated efforts to make public buildings, schools, and transportation facilities more accessible for PWDs.

He, however, appealed for more support, adding that PWDs often face unique challenges in accessing basic necessities, education, and employment.

The chairman said that inauguration of the new leadership who will pilot the affairs of the association for the next four years, marked a new beginning for members in the LGA.

He called on the new administration to lead by example, adding that the strength of a leader lies not in authority, but in the ability to inspire and uplift others.

In his remarks, Chairman of Aba North LGA, Timothy Iheke, represented by his Deputy, Christian Chijioke, pledged government’s support for PWDS.

Mr Iheke described PWDs as intelligent individuals and encouraged the new leadership to continue striving for inclusivity and empowerment.

In her acceptance speech, the NAPWPD LGA Coordinator, Roseline Alaribe, also expressed appreciation to the governor, for creating a supportive environment for PWDs.

She said, “We will appreciate more support for PWDs because many of us are graduates and we possess various skills, but require employment, empowerment, and training to improve our lives.”
