Senate President Godswill Akpabio has directed the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police to ensure the arrest of some suspects who dropped a sack of bullets on the highway in Zaria on Wednesday.

A video on social media showed bullets scattered on the ground with some remaining in a loose sack, as residents who spoke in the Hausa language mentioned that the sack was dropped from a vehicle heading towards Katsina State.

Some social media users said a sack of bullets fell off a trailer. But the police in Kaduna claimed that the sack of bullets was thrown off a moving Volkswagen Golf.

While watching the video during the plenary on Wednesday, Mr Akpabio charged the police to go after the suspects.

“I use this opportunity to call on the commissioner of police in Kaduna state to send a team to go and escort the trailer that is filled with bullets.

“Bullets are dropping on the road, and people are dying. These bullets that are dropping on the ground, we need to make a resolution on it now before it gets into the hands of bandits,” Mr Akpabio said.

In a statement following the development, the Kaduna State Police Command said it recovered a “sack containing about two hundred and ten (210) rounds of 7.56mm ammunition after receiving information that a sack was thrown off a moving Volkswagen Golf.”

The statement by DSP Mansir Hassan, the state police public relations officer, indicated that the divisional police officer of Samaru and his team received a report from the public that occupants of a commercial vehicle, a black Volkswagen Golf, suspiciously threw a sack out of the vehicle in motion on the Dogo Itace axis, Samaru, Zaria.

Mr Hassan said the DPO immediately alerted others, stating, “The patrol team swiftly moved to the scene and found the abandoned sack on the ground.”

He stated that due to the delay in information, the operatives could not arrest the vehicle and its occupants.

The statement further said the Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, charged the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely information to the police.

He said the state commissioner of police, Rabiu Mohammed, “assures that a full-scale manhunt for the fleeing suspects is already underway and reaffirms the Command’s unwavering commitment to proactive policing and the protection of lives and property across the state.”

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Thursday announced the withdrawal of 11,566 policemen from ‘Very Important Persons,’ while noting that the action follows an order by President Bola Tinubu.
