Man bags 21 months’ imprisonment over N50 million fraud

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Monday convicted and sentenced a man, Chinedu Chukwudole, to 21 months and 18 days’ imprisonment for obtaining the sum of N50 million under false pretences.
Justice Rahman Oshodi sentenced Mr Chukwudole after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining money by false pretence, brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Mr Oshodi found him guilty as charged and sentenced the convict to 21 months and 18 days’ imprisonment on the two-count charge.
The court also gave him an option of a N5 million fine.
The EFCC Counsel, Spiff Owede, in his review of facts, presented one witness and tendered several documents, which were admitted in evidence.
The anti-graft agency stated that the convict, sometime in January 2023 in Lagos, obtained N50 million from one Chukwudi Ezeh under the pretext that he had $70,000 to sell at the rate of N720 per US dollar.
Mr Owede said the convict failed to sell the dollar but dishonestly converted the complainant’s money to his personal use.
According to the prosecution, the offences contravene Sections 1(1)(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
