Ex-Super Eagles Captain, Troost-Ekong,  bags MFR honour, wishes team AFCON success

Captain of the Super Eagles at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire, William Troost-Ekong, on Tuesday, received the official certificate confirming his conferement with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. 

Confirming this on X, the skipper who led the team to a runner-up finish at the tournament, while expressing his gratitude for the recognition, said he was proud to represent Nigeria which gave him the platform to live his dream.

The Saudi Pro League club Al-Kholood defender wrote, “I am honoured and grateful to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (@officialABAT ), for conferring on me the MFR national honour. 

“I have been sent the official certificate today following the announcement last night. It’s a very proud moment for me and my family to receive this recognition. 

“Nigeria gave me my identity, my purpose, and the platform to live my dream through football. Wearing the green and white has always been a great responsibility, privilege, and a promise to give everything for the badge and for our people.”

The former Watford of England defender and captain who retired from the national team, earlier in December, also wished the Super Eagles success and promised his full support, as they begin their AFCON 2025 journey in Morocco, today, against Group C opponent Tanzania.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, alongside other delegation members, had at a ceremony at the Team Hotel in Faz, presented the Super Eagles class of 2024 with certificates of national honours as well as title documents to lands and houses President Bola Tinubu promised them on February 13, 2024.
