As part of efforts to celebrate the hosting of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the Moroccan central bank, formally known as the Bank Al-Maghrib, has issued a new coin and banknote bearing inscriptions about this year’s tournament.

In a statement on Monday, the country’s apex bank announced that it issued a commemorative silver coin with a face value of 250 dirhams ($27) and a new 100-dirham ($10.9) banknote.

“On the occasion of the organisation of the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, Bank Al-Maghrib issues a commemorative coin with a face value of 250 dirhams and puts into circulation a commemorative banknote with a face value of 100 dirhams,” the bank said

According to the bank, the coin is created with an alloy of 925 per cent silver and 75 per cent copper, weighing 28.28 grams. It has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres, a reeded edge and proof strike.

The front of the coin features the portrait of Moroccan ruler, King Mohammed VI, alongside inscriptions in Arabic: ‘Mohammed VI’ and ‘Royaume du Maroc’. The year of issue, 1447-2025, is also displayed in Arabic and Tifinagh script.

Meanwhile, the artistic representation of Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, topped by a map of Africa, and festive fireworks celebrating the AFCON in Morocco, are inscribed on the back of the coin, which is valued at 250 dirhams.

The banknote also features the king’s image on its front, the coat of arms of Morocco, a stylised representation of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex, a map of Africa, a Moroccan arabesque motif, and a stylised football.

The stadium will host the 2025 AFCON final.

On the back, the note bears the name of the issuing institution in both Tifinagh and Latin script, an interior view of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex, and other artistic descriptions.

The issuance of the new 100-dirham notes will be limited, with the first batch rolled out on Monday.
