As Nigeria joins the global community to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Christian Association of Nigeria has called on believers to balance festive joy with “wisdom and vigilance”.

In a Christmas message on Wednesday, CAN president Daniel Okoh appealed to security agencies to increase their presence around places of worship.

Mr Okoh emphasised that while Christmas represents the triumph of light over darkness, the reality of current security and economic challenges requires a practical approach to worship.

He appealed to church leaders, particularly those in high-risk areas, to prioritise the sanctity of human life over traditional gathering formats.

“In places where adequate security presence is lacking, church leaders should prayerfully consider holding services in safer locations or smaller gatherings,” he said.

Mr Okoh clarified that this counsel was rooted in responsible stewardship rather than fear, urging congregations to take proactive steps to ensure the safety of every worshipper.

Beyond security, the statement addressed the “economic difficulties” facing many Nigerians.

The archbishop reminded the faithful that the birth of Christ was a reassurance that God has not abandoned His people.

“Let us remember those grieving, displaced, or facing hardship. Let us be reminded that Nigeria’s future depends on a collective resolve for peaceful coexistence,” he said.

Mr Okoh prayed for national healing, expressing hope that the coming New Year would usher in a season of “lasting peace” for all Nigerians.

”Nigeria is our only home,” he noted. “Its future depends on our collective resolve.”
