Ogun assembly ends 2026 budget defence, vows strict oversight function
The Ogun State House of Assembly has concluded the defence of the 2026 budget proposal by ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), pledging strict oversight to ensure proper utilisation of public funds.

Chairman of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Musefiu Lamidi, stated this on Wednesday, at the end of the budget defence held at the assembly’s complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Mr Lamidi said that the assembly would closely monitor budget implementation to ensure that funds appropriated were used strictly for approved purposes and in line with extant financial regulations.
He stressed that the legislature would not hesitate to demand additional documentation or clarification from MDAs where gaps were identified during the budget review.
“The budget defence is not an end in itself; the House will continue to exercise its constitutional responsibility as the custodian of public finance by ensuring accountability, probity and value for money,” he said.
He explained that the exercise was conducted as a constructive engagement aimed at strengthening service delivery and aligning government spending with the needs of the people.
According to him, both the legislature and the executive share collective responsibility to deliver a 2026 budget that is realistic, implementable and responsive to the aspirations of Ogun State residents.
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS), Olugbenga Olaleye, told lawmakers that the agency generated over N84 billion as of October 2025.
He said that the sum represents more than 83 per cent of its revenue target for the outgoing year.
Mr Olaleye said that the service was targeting N250 billion in internally generated revenue in 2026, noting that strict enforcement of new federal tax laws would help expand the tax net and curb revenue leakages.
Other MDAs that appeared before the lawmakers include the Ministry of Budget and Planning, the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General of the State.
