Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said military drills conducted by the People’s Liberation Army were aimed at countering “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and foreign interference around Taiwan.

Mr Chen made the remarks on Monday in response to a media inquiry about the PLA drills, code-named “Justice Mission 2025,” highlighting their strategic purpose and signalling China’s position on Taiwan-related security threats.

The drills, which began on Monday, December 29, involved multiple forces from the PLA Eastern Theatre Command and focused on coordinated exercises around Taiwan Island to enhance military readiness and demonstrate operational capabilities.

Mr Chen explained that the exercises aimed to curb collusion between “Taiwan independence” forces and foreign elements that threaten peace, security, and stability across the Taiwan Strait, reinforcing China’s stance on territorial integrity.

In addition, Mr Chen stated the drills fundamentally safeguarded national sovereignty and territorial integrity, demonstrating China’s determination to protect its borders and reinforce its position against separatist activities in Taiwan and surrounding areas.

The spokesperson emphasised the mission was intended to defend both the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation and the immediate well-being of Taiwan compatriots, signalling protection of political, economic, and security priorities.

According to Mr Chen, the operation serves as a stern warning to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and external interference, stressing that attempts to undermine China’s sovereignty will be met with decisive and strong responses.

“Any separatist attempt for ‘Taiwan independence’ will be met with a heavy blow,” Mr Chen said, highlighting that China will respond firmly to actions perceived as threats to national unity or territorial control.

Mr Chen concluded by stating that the historical trend of national reunification was unstoppable; no one should underestimate the Chinese people’s strong resolve, firm will, and capabilities to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
