Veteran The Wire actor Isiah Whitlock Jr dies at 71

Veteran American actor best known for his role as Senator Clay Davis on HBO’s The Wire, Isiah Whitlock Jr., has died aged 71.
The late Whitlock Jr. was best known for his commanding screen presence and memorable roles in film and television
The news was announced on Tuesday by his manager, Brian Liebman, in an Instagram post.
“It is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Mr Whitlock Jr. If you knew him – you loved him. A brilliant actor and even better person. May his memory forever be a blessing. Our hearts are so broken. He will be very, very missed,” Mr Liebman wrote.
Mr Whitlock built a decades-long career as a character actor, earning widespread recognition for portraying authoritative, often morally complex figures across television and film.
He was best known for his role as Senator Clay Davis on HBO’s critically acclaimed series The Wire, a performance that made his gravelly delivery and sharp dialogue instantly recognisable to audiences.
Beyond The Wire, Mr Whitlock appeared in a wide range of productions, including Da 5 Bloods, BlacKkKlansman, 25th Hour, She Hate Me and Cedar Rapids.
He often collaborated with filmmaker Spike Lee, who cast him in several projects over the years, further cementing his place in contemporary American cinema.
His credits spanned across dramas and comedies, with appearances in shows such as Law & Order, Veep, Your Honor and The Good Fight.
