EPL: City rue Sunderland draw as Arsenal open four-point lead

Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes suffered a setback after a frustrating goalless draw at Sunderland left them four points behind leaders Arsenal.
Pep Guardiola’s side dominated possession at the Stadium of Light but failed to convert their superiority, allowing Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal to strengthen their grip at the summit.
City controlled 67 per cent of the ball and registered 14 shots, yet could not breach a resolute Sunderland defence on a freezing New Year’s Day in the North East.
City captain Bernardo Silva admitted disappointment, saying the champions were unhappy with their display, particularly after failing to make first-half control count.
In spite of the improved attacking intent after the break, City could not find a breakthrough as Sunderland extended their impressive unbeaten home record this season.
Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris praised his team’s character, saying his players disrupted City’s rhythm and created chances against one of Europe’s top sides.
There was encouragement for City as Ballon d’Or holder Rodri returned from injury, with Guardiola hailing his impact and influence during the second half.
However, Guardiola expressed concern over injuries to Savinho and Nico Gonzalez as City begin a demanding run of 10 matches across four competitions.
With Arsenal setting the pace, City will need consistency and fitness to avoid a second consecutive trophyless season, an outcome unthinkable under Guardiola.
