Dozens killed in crackdown, yet presidency says it won’t suppress #EndSARS
Yesterday the presidency retook its stance that #EndSARS street protests should end – the same day a group including Omoyele Sowore resumed protests at the Abuja airport.Â
FCT minister Muhammad Bello represented President Buhari at a National Youth Day government event. Presidential spokesman Garba Shehu cites a statement read by Mr. Bello on behalf of Mr. Buhari at that event:
“You must realise that protests cannot last indefinitely. My government will not lift a hand to stop or suppress you.”
Soldiers shot dead at least 12 peaceful #EndSARS protesters in Lagos on October 20, according to Amnesty International. The organisation said 56 had been killed before then as police tried to put down the uprising.Â
Mr. Buhari addressed the country two days after the army crackdown in Lagos and he warned protesters to stop, but he said nothing about the deadly crackdown in his speech.Â
Two weeks on, Mr. Buhari has still not taken responsibility for that army crackdown as the commander in chief, and he has held no one accountable for the deadly shootings.
